Billie Holiday Sony I Like Jazz: The Essence of Billie Holiday October 1, 1991 Audio CD Personnel includes: Billie Holiday (vocals).&newline;&newline;Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.&newline;&newline;Digitally remastered by Larry Keyes (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).&newline;&newline; This is part of the Columbia Legacy I Like Jazz series.&newline;&newline;Though it is probable that her talent would have been discovered eventually, the fact that John Hammond put a teenage Billie Holiday in the studio in 1933 is one of jazz's more fortuitous occurrences. Surrounding Ms. Holiday with excellent players at such an early stage surely helped shape her musicianly approach to a tune. Her incredible, elastic sense of beat placement and playful toying with melodies are informed by the blues--Bessie Smith was her idol--and an improviser's perspective on interpretation. This excellent compilation, taken roughly from the first 10 years of her career, is a fine introduction to her artistry for newcomers as well as a great single disc sampling for the already converted. Quintessential renditions of &doublequote;God Bless the Child,&doublequote; &doublequote; All of Me,&doublequote; and &doublequote; The Man I Love&doublequote; are included as well as an irrepressible, peppy &doublequote; What a Little Moonlight Can Do,&doublequote; taken from her first commercial recording session. Everclear Capitol So Much for the Afterglow October 7, 1997 Enhanced Editorial Reviews&newline;Amazon.com&newline;&doublequote;This is a song about Susan&doublequote; is the first line of Everclear's follow-up to the deservedly platinum Sparkle and Fade. That personalization is one of Art Alexakis's greatest gifts to postgrunge rock; rather than float generalized rage over the ever-growing roar of his power trio, he tells you his stories, those of the people around him, some he makes up--and makes them all yours in the end. The development in the music here, from the Beach Boys-style chorale at the top of the title cut to the new wavey jerkiness of &doublequote;Everything to Everyone&doublequote; and &doublequote;Normal Like You,&doublequote; boasts of not only the band's surefootedness but Alexakis's own generosity. The latter is best reflected in &doublequote;Father of Mine,&doublequote; one of the saddest, most brutal songs about family ever. --Rickey Wright Copyright: October 7, 1997 Price:

Frank Sinatra EMI Special Products Gold May 19, 1998 Audio CD Though the idea of a summarizing the career of a 20th-century icon like Frank Sinatra in a dozen songs is laughable, GOLD provides an excellent cross-section of the master singer's widely differing styles. There's the worldly-wise romantic of &doublequote;Young At Heart,&doublequote; the smitten paramour of &doublequote;Witchcraft,&doublequote; the star-crossed lover of &doublequote; My Funny Valentine&doublequote; and &doublequote;Same Old Saturday Night,&doublequote; and the sophisticated swinger of &doublequote; The Lady Is a Tramp&doublequote; and &doublequote;Chicago.&doublequote; The Nelson Riddle arrangement of &doublequote;I've Got You Under My Skin&doublequote; is a classic of its kind, while Sinatra's vocal on &doublequote;Nice 'N' Easy&doublequote; is the epitome of relaxed swing.
