1 Alexander, Victoria Husband List
HarperCollins Publishers August 2000 0380806312 / 9780380806317 Mass Market Paperback
From the Publisher&newline; An Unexpected Husband&newline;&newline;Against her better judgment, Lady Gillian Marley needs to find herself a husband-and quickly. To claim her uncle's unexpected bequest she must marry by her next birthday, which leaves only two months to find a malleable mate. Topping her list of eligible candidates is the honorable Earl of Shelbrooke, yet one look at the very handsome but enigmatic nobleman and Gillian knows that cajoling him into a marriage of convenience will be hardly convenient at all.&newline;&newline;A Marriage of Inconvenience&newline;&newline;Far from immune to Gillian's entrancing charms, the last thing Richard Shelton is about to bind himself into is a chaste marriage. Though the inheritance is more than and tempting, Richard knows the lady herself is the real prize and isn't about to allow Gillian to deny the burning fervor that sparks between them. Now he has only two months to convince her to be his wife in full ... before his mysterious secret is revealed and their lives explode irrevocably into scandal.&newline;&newline;Julia Quinn&newline;Warm, wise and witty!&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;Alexander (The Wedding Bargain) has a marvelous ear for witty dialogue and creates winning characters. Unfortunately, the plot of this otherwise terrific Regency rides includes twin clich s: a will with an outrageous stipulation and a hero masquerading as another man (think Scarlet Pimpernel). Widowed Lady Gillian Marley persuades friends to draw up a list of bachelors so she can fulfill the condition of her uncle's will that she marry before her 30th birthday to inherit 600,000. The money would augment her small income and enable her to fund a home for deserving female artists. Topping the list is the impoverished Earl of Shelbrooke, Richard Shelton, once a rake, now living a double life (he's an oil painter, a shocking calling for an aristocrat), trying to shore up the little that's left of the family fortune and provide dowries for four sisters. Will the earl lower himself for cold, hard cash? Will the lovely Gillian settle for a loveless marriage of convenience? The sex gets hot and heavy before the final answer in this delightful read. 2 Canham, Marsha Midnight Honor
New York Dell April 10, 2001 0440235227 / 9780440235224 Mass Market Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline;Weeping from the wild splendor of the moors to the battlefields of a land divided, Marsha Canham weaves an unforgettable novel of Jacobite Scotland - of a man bound by honor - and of the woman fated to both desire and defy him.&newline;&newline;Powerful, brave, irresistibly seductive, Angus Moy, chief of Clan Chattan, was everything Lady Anne could desire in a husband and a lover. But that was before the winds of war tore through her homeland. &newline;&newline; While Angus was pledged to fight for the English, Anne embarked on a course no ordinary woman would dare. Fiercely loyal to the Jacobite cause, she led her clan in battle - with the dangerously attractive Captain John MacGillivray at her side.&newline;&newline;Angus knew only too well the price of waging war. But something else made him play the traitor - a secret he was bound to keep from Anne at all costs. How could he know Anne would risk her life - or that his own actions would drive her into the arms of another man? &newline;&newline; As the tides of battle turned, and Anne was captured by the enemy, Angus had but one last chance to rescue her - and redeem himself in the eyes of the woman he had vowed to honor and protect forever....&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;Set during the Jacobite rebellion of the mid-1740s, Canham's latest (after Swept Away) details the events leading up to and following the battle at Culloden, where the English battled Bonnie Prince Charles's rebel Scots. Although Angus Moy has vowed that he wouldn't lead his people in their rebellion against England, his spirited wife, Anne, defies him by joining the rebels and becoming the colonel of his clan. Regardless of the obvious physical intimacy the two share, Anne's loyalties rest firmly with Scotland while Angus remains faithful to the crown for reasons he won't reveal. Due to their conflicting allegiances, Anne and Angus are estranged for a large part of the narrative, and readers may become confused as to who the hero is when Anne's handsome and able clansman, John MacGillivray, joins her crusade. Through lush and earthy prose, Canham depicts the simplicity of Highland life and the brutality of war with vivid accuracy, and infuses her characters with vitality. Readers who think that the setting of a novel should function merely as decorative wallpaper may be disappointed by the amount of space Canham devotes to historical events, but those who long to immerse themselves in another time and culture will appreciate this meticulously detailed tale. 4 Cantrell, Raine Tarnished Hearts
Topaz February 1, 1994 0451404424 / 9780451404428 Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;Denied by his monstrous father the dream of becoming a doctor, Trevoer Shelby is a fast-riding, hard-drinking Southern aristocrat in Civil War Alabama. Leah Reese is an overseer's daughter who refuses to marry a man of her parents' choosing. When Trevoer and Leah meet, they awaken a love that transcends class . . . a love that is soon threatened by betrayal.&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline; In 1860 Trevor Shelby and Leah Reese are lovers who are thwarted both individually and as a couple. Trevor's sadistic father refuses to allow him to become a doctor; Leah's parents want her to wed, in spite of her own wishes for an education. Class also separates the two: Trevor's family owns a plantation; Leah's father is an overseer for Trevor's friend, Robert De Moise. Trevor must go away in order to set right the destiny of his sister, Bella, whom he has not seen for nine years; in his absence, the jealous Robert lies and tells Leah that Trevor has no plans to return and later fails to deliver a letter from Trevor in which he asks her to wait for him. Meanwhile, Leah's parents marry her off to a crude farmer, and before long she starts showing with Trevor's child. The Civil War adds to the torment of the separated lovers. Some elements, such as Trevor's father's decay from syphilis, have impact, and the initial chemistry between the lovers is sweetly convincing, but Cantrell ( Calico ) draws out her plot with artificial complications. Leah's interest in Tennyson and her affection for Trevor raise interesting questions about class, which are then avoided by positing that Leah is an exception in her family. (Feb.) 4.0 Stars

From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline; What's an honorable Scot to do when a beautiful woman washes ashore beneath the family castle? Give her to his brother?&newline;&newline; When Tavish Graham stumbles upon the naked body of Sophie d'Alembert, he thinks she is dead. But it doesn't take him long to discover that Sophie is very much alive and more woman than he can handle, so he leaves her with his brother, James, the Earl of Monleigh. &newline;&newline;Beautiful, young and French, Sophie finds herself in the wild, strange land of the Scots. Terrified and not willing to trust James, she fails to tell him that she is the granddaughter of Louis XIV - and that she is fleeing a forced marriage to the hated English Duke of Rockingham. &newline;&newline;Reluctantly, Sophie begins to fall in love with the rugged Highlander. And before she can reveal the truth of her past, James discovers her royal connection, and wonders what else she is keeping from him. Can James resist her, or will he defy the might of England and France for a lover as wild and passionate as himself?&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline; The bone-chilling dampness of Scotland and the crackle of a hearth fire are nearly palpable in Coffman's (The Italian, etc.) atmospheric 18th-century Highland romance. Desperate to escape an arranged marriage to the narcissistic English Lord Rockingham, legendary French beauty Sophie D'Alembert, granddaughter of Louis XIV, slips out of the country on a boat bound for Norway. Her circumstances change abruptly when the ship gets caught in a storm and wrecks off the coast of Scotland. Nearly dead from battling the frigid seas, Sophie is rescued by a gallant young Scotsman who entrusts her to his imposing older brother, Jamie, the earl of Monleigh. Uncertain of the earl's political leanings and unwilling to be sent back to France or to Lord Rockingham, Sophie feigns amnesia. Jamie mistrusts Sophie, but he's unable to resist his growing attraction to her. It soon becomes apparent, however, that the couple can't avoid Rockingham indefinitely. The manner in which Sophie and Jamie finally overcome Rockingham will make some readers raise their eyebrows in disbelief, but the events leading up to their confrontation are compelling. This lush, well-told tale will remind readers why the Highlands are such a popular and superb setting for romance. (Nov.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

7 Coulter, Catherine Rosehaven (Song Series)
Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated July 1996 039914143X / 9780399141430 Hardcover
From the Publisher&newline; From the #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR.&newline;&newline; When heiress Hastings Trent is joined with warrior Severin Langthorne in marriage, she must uncover the mystery surrounding a secluded estate known as Rosehaven.&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;Medieval England provides the background for Coulter's latest spirited romance, a tale that pits willful young heiress Hastings of Trent against her new husband, doughty warrior Severin of Langthorne. The union has been decreed by Hastings's dying father, the Earl of Oxborough, to save herand the castle and estatefrom the evil depredations of Richard de Luci. As de Luci's forces advance on the castle, Severin consummates the marriage with practical dispatch. He explains away his harsh commands and brutal deflowering expedient behavior (if Hastings is no longer a virgin, de Luci cannot claim her as a bride), but Hastings feels she has been raped. Seeking counsel from several older women, she is told she must change her attitude and try to please her husband. She takes their advice and, to her surprise, Severin's behavior toward her changes dramatically. Then, just as the relationship begins to grow, beautiful Lady Marjorie, Severin's long-lost first love, arrives at the castle, perhaps, Hastings fears, to try to win Severin back. Compounding her worries is her discovery that the earl had maintained a mysterious second household at Rosehaven, a keep on the English coast. After an angry confrontation with Severin about Marjorie, Hastings sets out alone to find Rosehaven. The secret of the secluded castle is part of the requisite happy ending, but Coulter's (The Valentine Legacy) portrayal of an abusive husband as a romantic hero may leave some readers less than pleased. Although it is presented in the context of the era, her suggestion that a woman can, by changing her behavior, alter the pattern of abuse in a relationship is frightening. The notion that a physically brutal man can be tamed by an intelligent wife is difficult to accept. Major ad/promo; Doubleday Book Club main selection; Literary Guild featured alternate; author tour. (July)&newline;&newline;Kirkus Reviews&newline; To her usual successful mix of romance, humor, and spicy sex talk (think Wife of Bath with a pinch of dominatrix), the author of the Legacy trilogy (The Valentine Legacy, 1995, etc.) adds a rather substantial leavening of Disney-esque animal characters to a story set in 1277 England.&newline;&newline; They include Gilbert the castle goat, who gives milk and eats gauntlets; Edgar the Wolfhound (to whom Severin of Langthorne ties Hastings, his young wife, when he wants to humiliate her); Alfred, the huge housecat and familiar of Hastings's teacher, a recluse called the &doublequote;Healer&doublequote; who hates all men until she's smitten with Severin's man Gwent (&doublequote;that lack-witted oxhead&doublequote;); and Trist, the cute marten who cuddles beneath Severin's tunic. Besides comic relief, Trist's loving presence signifies to Hastings that the fierce-looking stranger to whom she's been betrothed isn't the scary warrior she first imagines. Severin has just returned from the Crusades to find his brother dead, his mother mad, and his estate penniless. With the blessing of King Edward, he has come to Oxborough Castle in East Anglia to wed Hastings, an heiress. He wants a sweet submissive wife who will give him an heir and leave him alone. Instead, he finds a strong-willed young woman well versed in self-preservation and herbal healing. (Borla root in ale makes a &doublequote;manhood&doublequote; flaccid; mugwort and primrose heal a swollen nose.) Beneath the usual conventions of the genre and some spirited good humor is Coulter's standard grim underpinning of domestic violence and marital rape-though this time, while not dispensing with them, she does suggest that men are not as deadly as they seem, especially if skillfully handled.&newline;&newline;Standard bawdy fare, Coulter-style, though the violence may offend the growing number of romance readers who are dissatisfied with rape in any form.

9 Coulter, Catherine The Heiress Bride (Bride Series)
Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated December 1992 0399137785 / 9780399137785 Hardcover
From the Publisher&newline;Dear Reader,&newline;Welcome to the exciting conclusion of the English Regency Bride Trilogy, The Heiress Bride.&newline;&newline; You met Sinjun Sherbrooke in The Sherbrooke Bride and in The Hellion Bride, a delightful, quite endearing fifteen-year-old who, I hope, charmed your socks off.&newline;&newline; Now she's nineteen, blessed with Sherbrooke blue eyes, wit to burn, and a wonderful sense of humor. She is also bored with the London Season until she spies Colin Kinross, the Scottish earl of Ashburnham, across the dance floor at a London ball. When she overhears Colin complain that he must find a wealthy bride quickly in order to survive, Sinjun promptly introduces herself as the answer to his prayers.&newline;&newline;Despite all odds, Sinjun manages an elopement to Scotland to begin her life in a drafty old castle that holds more revelations and surprises than Sinjun could ever imagine. You'll also meet another ghost, Pearlin' Jane, who teams up with the Virgin Bride.&newline;&newline;Do enjoy Sinjun. She's one hell of a bride.&newline;&newline; Please write to me at P.O. Box 17, Mill Valley, CA 94942 or email me at ReadMoi@aol.com and let me know which of the three Bride novels you like best.&newline;&newline;Catherine Coulter &newline;&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline; This byzantine conclusion to Coulter's Bride trilogy ( The Sherbrooke Bride ; The Hellion Bride ), set in 1807 Scotland and loaded with sex, splinters under the burden of its foolish and two-dimensional characters. Colin Kinross, seventh earl of Ashburnham, faces daunting problems: his castle is decaying, villainous clansmen are usurping his land and unmanageable debts keep mounting. But Joan ``Sinjin'' Sherbrooke, at 19 one of England's wealthiest women, has fallen in love with him and proposes a financially rewarding marriage. In order to escape Sinjin's two protective brothers, they elope to Colin's Scottish castle. There Colin presents Joan with two surly stepchildren and a pair of malicious sisters-in-law--it seems he has kept a previous marriage secret. Complications abound. An anonymous letter writer accuses Colin of throwing his first wife off a cliff--are murderous kinsmen seeking vengeance? Even ghosts are pressed to intervene at crucial moments as th e disjointed plot veers out of control. (Jan.)&newline;&newline;Library Journal&newline; The Heiress Bride is the final book in Coulter's &doublequote;Regency Bride&doublequote; trilogy, and many of the characters in the first two titles reappear. This one focuses on 19-year-old Sinjun Sherbrooke, the youngest of the three Sherbrookes (her brothers were married in the previous volumes). She is a bored heiress and almost past the marrying age. At a ball, she meets Colin Kinross, who desperately needs to marry a wealthy woman. Sinjun falls for him immediately (he is incredibly handsome) and offers herself as his wife. Despite family opposition, they marry and move to his castle in Scotland. Sinjun is then introduced to his family, which includes two stepchildren and evil and deranged relatives. On the way to the requisite happy ending, she must deal with ghosts and a debilitating illness and solve the mystery behind Colin's first wife's death. Coulter has many fans, and this book, read competently by Anne Flosnik, is tailor-made for them; other listeners may be put off by the preposterous plot lines and unrealistic characters. Public libraries should purchase for popular fiction collections.-Mary Knapp, Madison P.L., WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.&newline;&newline;BookList&newline; The finale to Coulter's bride trilogy brings the cast from those previous novels to Scotland, where the sister of the Earl of Sherbrooke has just eloped with a Scottish laird. The new bride, Joan, is appalled to find herself the stepmother of two children and caretaker of a run-down castle, which she must share with a malevolent aunt and a her spouse's fey sister-in-law (from her beloved's previous marriage). A murder mystery, feuding clans, and bridal-night terrors are also stirred into the plot, which features an appearance by a ghost called Pearlin' Jane. Coulter is more interested in detailed accountings of the newlywed's many sexual encounters than she is in the historical sett

10 Coulter, Catherine The Nightingale Legacy (Legacy Series #2)
Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated December 1994 0399139702 / 9780399139703 Hardcover
From the Publisher&newline; On the eve of her nineteenth birthday, the vivacious Caroline Derwent-Jones looks forward to being free of her oafish guardian, Mr. Ffalkes. But Mr. Ffalkes has other plans for Caroline and her inheritance; Caroline must escape.&newline;&newline; In her flight, Caroline encounters Lord Chilton of Mount Hawke, Frederic North Nightingale, and finds herself tangled in mystery and romance. Amid murder, enigmatic secrets, and a long standing tradition of no women at Mount Hawke, Lord Chilton discovers his desire for Caroline.&newline;&newline;&doublequote;Witty dialogue and bawdy, eccentric characters add up to an engaging, fan-pleasing story.&doublequote;--Publishers Weekly&newline;&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline; The second novel in Coulter's Legacy trilogy is a delightful Regency romance brimming with drama, sex and colorful characters. It's 1814, and the young, long-haired, brooding Lord Chilton, Frederick North Nightingale, who briefly appeared in The Wyndham Legacy, is on his way from his Cornish castle, Mount Hawke, to London when he stops at an inn for the night. There, he meets the smart, beautiful and feisty 19-year-old Caroline Derwent-Jones, who has just escaped Roland Ffalkes, her lecherous, inheritance-seeking guardian, and is en route to the Cornish home of her aunt, Eleanor Penrose. North protects Caroline from Ffalkes, who shows up unexpectedly, but she departs before the nobleman can tell her that her aunt, whom he knew, has been murdered. North and Caroline soon meet again, though, and before long he accepts her proposal of marriage-much to the horror of his three misogynist male servants, appalled that the union will break the long-standing tradition of no women living at Mount Hawke. Coulter complicates her story line with a couple of weak plot twists involving a search for local treasure and the murder of several other women (the killer's identity and motive, when finally revealed, strain plausibility), but her witty dialogue and bawdy, eccentric characters add up to an engaging, fan-pleasing story nonetheless. Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club selection. (Dec.)&newline;&newline;Library Journal&newline; At age 19, orphan Catherine Dewent-Jones eagerly anticipates taking control of her own financial affairs. Ffalkes, her greedy and unscrupulous legal guardian, attempts to arrange a marriage for her with his weakling son, Owen. Catherine flees and soon meets Lord Chilton. She is immediately attracted to the handsome but grim and brooding lord. She and Chilton eventually marry to protect her from the devious Ffalkes. After a series of murders, Catherine receives death threats, and the novel lumbers along to its foregone conclusion. While this novel is billed as a sequel to The Wyndham Legacy (Putnam, 1994), the main characters from that story don't make an appearance until late in the book. However, the popularity of Coulter's previous novels makes this a necessary purchase for public libraries with romance readers. [See Prepub Best Sellers, p. 55; Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 8/94.]-Margaret Hanes, Sterling Heights P.L., Mich.&newline;&newline;BookList&newline; As &doublequote; The Wyndham Legacy&doublequote; scales the best-seller lists, the second volume of Coulter's Legacy trilogy appears. A mysterious murder in 1814 on the cliffs of Cornwall opens the action; attempted rape, frantic flight, misogynistic manservants, steamy sex, and more murders follow. As in &doublequote; The Wyndham Legacy&doublequote;, danger, hidden treasure, and magical intervention play a role in Coulter's grand finale. This time out, our hero is Lord Chilton of Mount Hawke, Frederic North Nightingale, familiar as the brooding brother-at-arms of the Earl of Chase, Marcus Wyndham, in the first Legacy novel. Caroline Derwent-Jones, a 19-year-old heiress, is the anachronistic heroine Nightingale rescues, resists, and then ravishes--with her enthusiastic and energetic assistance. There are tiny traces here of Austen and Dickens, with heartier helpings of &doublequote; The Perils of Pauline&doublequote; and every other story ever marketed--like so many commodities--with the help of sex. Not much history, but plenty of romance: Coulter fans will love this frothy, sexy fairy tale. A selection of the Literary Gui

11 Coulter, Catherine The Valentine Legacy (Legacy Series #3)
Penguin Group (USA) Incorporated August 1995 0399140948 / 9780399140945 Hardcover
From the Publisher&newline;Twenty-year-old Jessie Warfield is branded a disgrace for riding as a jockey on her father's racehorses, wearing men's clothing, exposing her skin to the sun and, in general, not acting like a lady at all.&newline;&newline;James Wyndham, eligible widower and owner of a nearby horse farm, is Jessie's rival on the race track. Outwardly competitive to the extreme with James, she is secretly in love with him. James, having known her since she was fourteen, sees her only as a little sister and a bratty one at that.&newline;&newline;Together they are the unlikeliest romantic duo among their native Baltimore riding set. When Jessie sets out to protect James from a marriage entrapment, she ends up compromising her own reputation and is pressured into leaving town. She flees to an unlikely haven: the estate of James's British cousins, the Earl and &doublequote;Duchess&doublequote; of Chase. There she is pampered, dressed, and transformed into a lady. Smitten by the new Jessie, James proposes and they marry.&newline;&newline;Their new, shared passion results in hideous nightmares - nightmares that soon reveal themselves to be recovered memories of a long-ago attempted rape and murder. When connections are made between those events and the pirate Blackbeard's diaries, the hunt is on for his buried treasure.&newline;&newline;Library Journal&newline;Refusing to marry James Wyndham, the man she has loved secretly for years, outspoken, naive Jessie Warfield escapes to England and the estate of James's cousins- and a life as a &doublequote;nanny.&doublequote; However, when James comes to fetch her, a group of delightful meddlers make certain that they end up neatly married instead. Old secrets, a pirate's legacy, and a cast of wonderful characters are part of this funny, lively, and occasionally mysterious story that provides a satisfactory conclusion to Coulter's &doublequote;Legacy&doublequote; trilogy (The Wyndham Legacy, Putnam, 1994, and The Nightingale Legacy, Putnam, 1994.) Readers who enjoy this historical might also find those by Jo Beverley of interest. [Coulter lives in Mill Valley, Cal.]&newline;&newline;BookList&newline; The horse-racing world of nineteenth-century Baltimore makes a great setting for Coulter's newest romance, the last in the Legacy trilogy, following &doublequote; The Nightingale Legacy&doublequote; (1994) and &doublequote; The Wyndham Legacy&doublequote; (1994). Tomboyish jockey Jessie Warfield captures the attention, if not the affection, of James Wyndham by beating him in races, dressing and riding in a definitely unfeminine fashion, and even rescuing a horse stolen from his stables. Naturally the two are destined for love and marriage, but it takes the &doublequote; My Fair Lady&doublequote; ministrations of Wyndham's English kin over a runaway Jessie to seal their fate. This conclusion to Coulter's Legacy trilogy reintroduces lively characters from across the sea and winds up with an American treasure hunt involving a pirate legacy. Coulter, while more inclined to adventure than realism, does an excellent job of luring her readers into this unlikely, exuberant adventure.

12 D'Alessandro, Jacquie Whirlwind Wedding
Random House Publishing Group September 2000 0440235510 / 9780440235514 Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;Austin Randolph Jamison, Ninth Duke of Bradford, met the uncanny beauty at the ball at Bradford Hall. And from that first moment, he was stunned. How could this unsophisticated female, who climbed trees in a ball gown to rescue a kitten, know secrets that could ruin his family and speak of danger that threatened them all? Who was she, this American bluestocking who knew too much, whose innocence shone in her eyes even as her full lips tempted sin? Suddenly the duke knew he could not afford to let her go.&newline;&newline; Some called it a gift. To Elizabeth Matthews, however, her visions were a responsibility that bound her to protect others from danger, no matter that the gossipmongers whispered she was chasing the duke to the altar. She vowed to use her powers to protect Austin at any cost, reckless of the passions that drove her into his arms, the need that made her his bride, never expecting her marriage to turn into a love match that would become the ton's most delicious scandal.&newline;&newline;Romantic Times - Kathe Robin&newline;Warmth and humor, love and passion fill the pages of this charming book. Ms. D'Alessandro builds the suspense with each of Elizabeth's visions, and then tempers the tension with laugh-out-loud humor. Her second historical romance, secures her place among new and noteworthy writers.

13 D'alessandro, Jacquie Who Will Take This Man?
HarperCollins Publishers September 2003 0060536705 / 9780060536701 Mass Market Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline;Philip Whitmore, Viscount Greybourne, has been deserted at the altar, and Meredith Chilton-Grizedale, the Matchmaker of Mayfair, is ruined. This was the most anticipated wedding of the Season and would have secured her position. But now the word is out that the groom-to-be is cursed, making him the Most Unmarriageable Man in England. If Meredith is to have any hope of a future, she'll need to help him break this curse and marry him off. Unfortunately, the only woman he now wants is Meredith-the Most Unmarriageable Woman in England! &newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;A screwball comedy in all the best ways, D'Alessandro's latest Regency-era romance (after Whirlwind Affair) tackles the thorniest problem Meredith Chilton-Grizedale has ever encountered: What is a professional matchmaker to do when her cliens, Philip Whitmore, the handsome heir to an earldom, suffers from an ancient Egyptian curse that will kill his bride within two days of their wedding? Why, fall in love with him herself, of course. But the curse is only one stumbling block. Another is her secret past as a pickpocket, which could ruin Philip in the eyes of Society. And there's also a shadowy villain who is bent on destroying everything (and everyone) that Philip cares for. Meredith hasn't fought her way off the streets and into the finest drawing rooms by giving up, however, and she's willing to do whatever is necessary to break the curse and help Philip defeat his enemy. The protagonists share an easy intimacy, which is deftly illustrated by the running jokes woven throughout. D'Alessandro's tale falters in pacing when Philip begins to take himself too seriously, but this doesn't detract much from the book's overall charm. Trotting at the heels of Julia Quinn and catching up fast, D'Alessandro should win new fans with her exuberant offering. (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

19 Deveraux, Jude Mountain Laurel
Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group July 1990 0671689754 / 9780671689759 Hardcover
From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline;Captain Ring Montgomery was handsome, a skilled rider, a crack shot, popular with the men and their ladies. That was reason enough for a jealous, surly colonel to saddle Montgomery with a most peculiar assignment: to escort an opera singer into the Colorado gold fields.&newline;&newline;Ring's plan was to scare the little lady enough so that she'd hightail it for home. After all, a Civil War was brewing! But LaReina, The Singing Duchess - as Maddie Worth called herself on stage - didn't scare easy. And she didn't intend to explain her reasons for coming West to any high and mighty soldier. Captain Montgomery might be smart enough to figure out that she was no European duchess, and gentleman enough not to take advantage of her when he'd had the chance, but he'd have to go on thinking she had some insane desire to sing opera to a bunch of ragtag miners. She didn't dare trust him with the truth....&newline;&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;Maddie Worth, blackmailed into carrying letters between abolitionist spies who hold her sister captive, resents the authoritarian presence of Captain Ring Montgomery, who helps her navigate the gold fields of Colorado. ``Deveraux fans may find the plot a little thin, but will welcome yet another pair of feisty, independent souls whose conversation crackles with electricity,'' said PW.
