8 Johnston, Joan Comanche Woman
Dell November 26, 2002 0440236800 / 9780440236801 Mass Market Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline; In this dazzling prequel to the New York Times bestsellers The Cowboy and The Texan, Joan Johnston takes us back to a time when Texas was a young and wild republic, and three strong-willed sisters carved out a destiny that would spawn two legendary dynasties. Here is the spellbinding tale of a woman captured by Comanches-and of the proud warrior who vows to make her love him.&newline;&newline;Born to a white father and his Indian bride, Long Quiet believed his destiny lay with his Comanche brothers. But his heart secretly belonged to Bayleigh Stewart, daughter of the richest cotton planter in Texas, who'd been abducted by a marauding brave and sold to the highest bidder. For years he'd searched for the violet-eyed beauty, and now a strange twist of fate led him to her. &newline;&newline;Called Shadow by her captors, Bay had almost given up hope of rescue, when a rugged stranger in buckskins appeared, risking his life to bring her home...and awakening a passion that burned hot and true. Bay knew her place was with her family. But Long Quiet hadn't found her only to lose her again. He had to convince this woman-his woman-that her true home was with him... as together they would fight for a love strong enough to bridge two worlds....&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;A prequel to Johnston's previous The Cowboy and The Texan, this simply written saga is set in 1843, when white settlers and Comanches battled bitterly for possession of Texas. Although born to a white father, Long Quiet embraces the ways of his Comanche mother and harbors hatred for the &doublequote;White-eyes&doublequote; who have pushed his people off the land. Then one day he spies Bay Stewart, daughter of a wealthy cotton planter, and instantly (and implausibly) falls in love with her. When she is abducted by Comanches, he spends three years seeking the red-haired beauty before he discovers her hidden among a tribe led by Many Horses, a warrior whose life Long Quiet conveniently saves. In return, Many Horses allows Long Quiet to marry Bay. Two of Long Quiet's most difficult challenges still remain, however. First, he must woo Bay, and then he must decide whether he should renounce his beloved heritage or live, ostracized, among the Comanches. Johnston's intricate family connections boggle the mind and her secondary characters lack dimension. Still, this is a brisk romance chock full of compelling conflicts and strong local color. 12 Kelton, Elmer Badger Boy (Texas Rangers Series #2)
Doherty, Tom Associates, LLC January 2002 0812577507 / 9780812577501 Mass Market Paperback
From the Publisher&newline;&newline;&newline; The Texas Frontier, 1865&newline;&newline;The Civil War is over and Texas is reluctantly yielding to the Union soldiers spreading across the state, even into the dangerous Comanche country. David &doublequote;Rusty&doublequote; Shannon, proud member of a &doublequote;ranging company&doublequote; attempting to protect Texas settlers from Indian depredations, finds that the rangers are being disbanded. He makes his way home to his land on the Red River, hoping to take up the life of a farmer and the hand of the beloved girl he left behind, Geneva Monahan. &newline;&newline; But Geneva has married in Rusty's long absence and the country is filled with hostiles-not just Indians, but hate-filled Confederates, overbearing Union soldiers, and army renegades. Rusty's youth as a captive of the Comanches returns to haunt him when, in pursuit of Indian raiders, he takes as prisoner Badger Boy, a white child taken from his murdered parents by a Comanche warrior.&newline;&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline; The indefatigable Kelton cranks out yet another rousing western, his ninth novel under the Forge Books brand, with this continuation of the saga of the Texas Rangers and his redheaded hero, Rusty Shannon. In 1865, the Civil War is just about over and the Confederacy is collapsing everywhere. Only small, undermanned ranger companies protect the Texas frontier from marauding bands of Comanche warriors, and army deserters, outlaws and Yankee soldiers add to the troubles of a desperate population. When Rusty leaves the rangers to return to his farm, he finds that his sweetheart has married somebody else. Racial tension between rednecks and freed slaves boils over, and old enemies return to settle scores. Rusty faces a new dilemma when he captures a white youngster, called Badger Boy by the Comanches who had seized him as a baby and raised him. Rusty himself is an orphan once captured by the Comanches. Observing Badger Boy, he begins to understand a great deal about his own past and what it means to his future. Since Rusty's debut in The Buckskin Line (1999), he has grown from a na ve kid into a responsible leader of rangers, a savvy frontiersman who is as tough as a boiled owl and smart as a fox. Running gunfights with Indians, outlaw ambushes and showdowns with horse thieves and renegade murderers liven up this polished and tightly wrapped yarn of duty, honor, courage and gunsmoke. Kelton is a master of both plot and character development, and his Rusty Shannon is a down-to-earth, dusty cowboy whose exploits always thrill Kelton's fans. Regional author tour. (Jan.) Forecast: In his niche, Kelton is the tops. He's been voted the Greatest Western Writer of All Time by the Western Writers of America, and is a six-time winner of the Spur Award. If booksellers emphasize his stature in the field, this standout title could be one of his best-selling yet. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

13 Kelton, Elmer Buffalo Wagons
Jove Pubns January 1988 044108396X / 9780441083961 Paperback
From the Publisher&newline; For Gage Jameson, the summer of 1873 has been a poor hunt. A year ago he felled sixty-two buffalo in one stand, but now the great Arkansas River herd is gone, like the Republican herd before it.&newline;&newline; In Dodge City, old hide hunters speak is awe of a last great heard to the south--but no hunter who values his scalp dares ride south of the Cimarron and into Comanche territory. None but Gage Jameson....&newline;&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;...should find eager readers...&newline;&newline;Publishers Weekly&newline;Set in present-day London and Provence, this suspense novel by the popular author of The Neighbors is part juicy family melodrama, part stirring suspense story. On the eve of her 80th birthday, reclusive Annesley family matriarch Odile writes to each member of the Annesley clan from her sprawling farmhouse in Provence, communicating details of her will. In response, Odile's five granddaughters plan to travel in convoy to the French homestead for a surprise visit to their estranged grandmother. The trip is deferred until the midpoint of the novel, as the granddaughters are reacquainted with each other. Clemency, the eldest, is comfortably married with four children and lives outside London; Elodie is a single and raunchy dress designer living in Paris. Madeleine, residing alone in London, is a Norwegian &doublequote;ice queen&doublequote;; Isabelle, at the other end of the spectrum, is a plumpish student at Oxford. Finally, Cherie is a single mother, poor and resentful of the Annesley entitlement, from which she feels excluded. This motley crew arrives in Provence to find the farmhouse quite desolate and the garden disturbed by a freshly dug grave. The terror heightens as two more Annesleys are murdered and the group uncovers bloody secrets buried in the family's past. Though the novel's denouement fails to convince, its plotting is otherwise solid, its characters rounded and its pacing sprightly. As with Smith's previous romantic suspense novels, it should find eager readers. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.&newline;&newline;Library Journal&newline; In her fourth novel, Smith (The Neighbors) combines the foible-filled lives of nine cousins with the spookiness of an old mansion in Provence to produce a mystery unlike the traditional whodunit. Avoiding clues and detectives, Smith piles the corpses of murdered relations onto a raging bonfire of family passions, stoked by a long-ignored scandal. The 80th birthday of the family matriarch provokes a house party where gory death continues to stalk the revelers. A crescendo of an ending worthily concludes the tale. Smith knows her Provence and writes convincingly of London and Oxford as well. As long as readers first memorize the thoughtfully provided family tree, this is a corker of a story for mystery fans, particularly those who enjoy psychological thrillers of the Ruth Rendell school. A solid buy for leisure reading and public libraries.--Barbara Conaty, Library of Congress Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.&newline;&newline;Internet Book Watch&newline;Though years have passed since the tragedy and Odile Annesley, now eighty, remains in exile in Provence, refusing to have anything to do with family members. However, the octogenarian sends her will to her family. This, in turn, prompts a response from Odile's five adult grandchildren, who want reconciliation before grandmere dies. The quintet agrees to visit grandmere together without asking or warning the former Annesley matriarch. However, before journeying to Provence, the five sisters first become reacquainted with one another. After a brief period, they arrive at the forlorn remote farm house that grandmere has made home for about four decades since she fled her beloved spouse and children. However, reconciliation proves deadly as history repeats itself and someone wants to eliminate the Annesley heirs. Family Reunion is an exciting suspense thriller that takes off in the second half of the novel. Much of the first half of the story line is dedicated to introducing the five siblings. This proves a bit slow, leaving the audience to wonder if the book is a character study. However, the device 5.0 Stars

Bantam June 1, 1987 0553264990 / 9780553264999 Mass Market Paperback
Editorial Reviews&newline;&newline; From Publishers Weekly&newline;Readers of L'Amour's Westerns and his recent medieval saga The Walking Drum will not be disappointed by this contemporary epic. Proving that he is above all a great raconteur, the prolific L'Amour sets his latest in Siberia where a downed American test pilot, Joseph &doublequote;Joe Mack&doublequote; Makatozi, has been taken after his capture by the Russians. Part Sioux, Joe Mack escapes prison only to face the seemingly impossible odds of getting across Siberia to the Bering Strait, where like his ancestors, he can cross into North America. Joe Mack is a classic American hero, thrown back into the wilderness and forced to rely on his wits and his ancestral skills to survive the deadly cold and elude his Soviet pursuers, including his nemesis, a Siberian tracker. L'Amour brings the same colorful realism to this sweeping adventure that has made his Westerns so beloved. 350,000 copy first printing; Literary Guild main selection.&newline;Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.&newline;&newline; From Library Journal&newline;Once again demonstrating his versatility, the prolific L'Amour has written a contemporary adventure novel set in the &doublequote;Wild East&doublequote; of Siberia. U.S. Air Force Major Joseph Makatozi&doublequote;Joe Mack&doublequote;is shot down by the Russians, who intend to wring secret information from him before executing him. The catch in their plans is that Rambo-like Joe Mack is part Sioux, part Cheyenne, and a nearly Olympic-caliber athlete.
